MTN Grooms Nigerian Schoolchildren to Become World Champions Through Grassroots Sports
Telecommunications giant rewards outstanding Calabar schools with sporting equipment under MTN Champs Season 4 initiative

Telecommunications giant MTN Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to developing grassroots sports and nurturing young Nigerian athletes into future world champions through sustained investment in school sports.
The company reiterated its commitment during the Season 4 MTN Champs grant implementation and presentation of sporting equipment to Government Secondary School, Henshaw Town, and Government Technical College, Calabar, Cross River State.
The initiative, according to MTN, is designed to identify promising young athletes, provide them with opportunities to develop their talents and equip schools with the resources needed to promote sports participation and excellence.
Speaking at the event, the Senior Manager, Network Operations for South East and South South, Dr. Theophelous Nnabugwu, said the donation was in recognition of the schools' outstanding performances during the fourth season of the MTN Champs competition, which attracted participation from schools across Nigeria.
Nnabugwu explained that the company regarded investment in young people as an important contribution to society, particularly at a time when Nigerian sports needed a stronger foundation for producing athletes capable of competing successfully on the international stage.
"At MTN, we believe in giving back to society. We want these kids to excel, especially in sports. We believe in supporting the youth that will take over sports tomorrow. We groom them from this stage, right from school age, to become world champions," he said.
He expressed confidence that the young beneficiaries could rise to international prominence if given the right encouragement, facilities and opportunities to develop their abilities.
"We are confident that these young ones will be world champions tomorrow, and that is why MTN is investing in their lives," he added.
The MTN official explained that the company's intervention went beyond recognising the schools' achievements at the competition, stressing that the programme was intended to encourage a sustainable culture of sports development among Nigerian schoolchildren.
He also disclosed that MTN Champs was an annual initiative and that the company, through the MTN Foundation, would continue to provide guidance and increased support to participating schools.
According to him, the objective is to ensure that talented pupils and students are not denied opportunities to develop their sporting abilities because of inadequate equipment or limited institutional support.
The sporting items presented to the beneficiary schools included table tennis boards and bats, footballs, Scrabble sets, chessboards and other sporting kits.
The equipment is expected to support sporting activities in the schools, widen students' opportunities to participate in different disciplines and strengthen their preparations for future competitions.
Receiving the items on behalf of Government Secondary School, Henshaw Town, the school's Games Master and Vice Principal, Sports, Edem Bassey, expressed appreciation to MTN for the intervention.
Bassey said the equipment would contribute significantly to the school's sporting activities and promised that the items would be put to proper use for the benefit of the students.
"We are very happy to receive these items as it will really help us in our sports activities," he said.
The donation underscores the importance of collaboration between the private sector and educational institutions in building a stronger sporting culture among Nigerian youths.
For many schools, inadequate sporting facilities and equipment can limit students' participation in extracurricular activities and prevent talented young people from reaching their full potential. Interventions such as the MTN Champs programme can help bridge some of these gaps by providing schools with resources to identify and nurture emerging talents.
Beyond physical fitness and competition, participation in sports can help students develop discipline, teamwork, resilience, leadership and confidence. These qualities can contribute to their academic, social and personal development while opening pathways to professional sporting careers.
Nigeria has a rich history of producing athletes who have distinguished themselves at continental and global competitions. However, sustaining that tradition requires deliberate investment in talent identification, coaching, school facilities and regular competitions from the grassroots.
School-based sports programmes are particularly important because they allow young athletes to discover their abilities early, receive guidance from teachers and coaches, and compete in organised environments that can prepare them for higher levels of competition.
MTN's commitment to supporting schoolchildren through the MTN Champs initiative reflects the role corporate organisations can play in complementing government efforts to develop sports infrastructure and encourage youth participation.
The presentation in Calabar also highlights the need to ensure that sporting interventions translate into lasting benefits for students. Beyond providing equipment, consistent training, proper maintenance of facilities, qualified coaching and opportunities to compete will be essential to helping beneficiaries turn their potential into measurable achievements.
With MTN indicating that the programme will continue annually, the beneficiary schools and their students are expected to have further opportunities to strengthen their sporting activities and prepare for future editions of the competition.
For the students, the immediate benefit is access to equipment that can make sports more engaging and accessible. In the longer term, the ambition is to create an environment in which promising young Nigerians can develop their abilities, compete confidently and aspire to represent the country at major international sporting events.
Through the intervention, MTN has reiterated its belief that future champions can emerge from Nigerian classrooms when young people are identified early, encouraged to pursue their talents and provided with the support necessary to succeed.
